Reiki for ADHD

There are so many people who are diagnosed these days as being ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) or ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) or are on the Autistic Spectrum (Asperger’s/Autistic), most people are aware of someone around them who have been diagnosed with one of more of these. There are many views on the cause of the conditions; medical, immunisation side-effects, some call it bad parenting, some blame diet & lifestyle, technology, or even all of the above.

The bottom line is that regardless of what is causing the problem, it exists and for those who have a close loved one suffering from this, it can be stressful, not to mention exhausting for all parties. So what can you do? Many sufferers find that even with medication they still have issues that make life difficult, the good news is the answer may well be Reiki!

What Is Reiki?

Reiki is a non-invasive Japanese energy healing system that dates back to the 1800’s, it has been in the west since the 1960’s and practitioners are fairly easy to find, they are also available through the NHS in some NHS Trusts of the UK.

Reiki is Rei meaning Higher Power & Ki which is the Japanese name for the life force energy, you may have come across alternative names for this life force; prana, Qi, Chee etc. It can be given hands on or hands off, so for those who have an issue being touched, fear not.

What Happens In A Session?

Depending on the mobility of the person having Reiki, it can be given sitting in a chair or lying on a therapy bed, I prefer to use a therapy bed as I feel it is more relaxing but this is not always possible if space is limited or if someone is not very mobile, the healing will still work either way.

A session of Usui Reiki is usually around 30 minutes, the treatment is given with the client fully dressed, although I do recommend comfortable clothing so you can be as relaxed as possible.

I usually put some music on, this is more for atmosphere, so this can be eliminated if it is an issue for anyone. Many ADD/ADHD & Autistic people have sensitive hearing and so they may prefer the silence, sometimes it goes the other way with them unable to bear silence! I always like to check their preference so they can relax as much as possible.

I always leave it to the client to decide if they wish to chat or not during a session, it won’t be any less effective if they prefer to chat, for some people this is how they relax.

During the session I will work on their aura – this is the layer of energy on the outside of the body, a bit like the Ready Brek Kid, their energy system and the chakras of the body to remove any blockages and to rebalance any imbalances, this will affect them mind, body & spirit which is why it is so great.

What Effect Does Reiki Have on ADHD/ADD/Autism?

Normally I would start with a client’s head, this is the crown chakra, working my way down their body to their feet, there are chakras in the soles of the feet too. You are probably wondering why I change it in these instances right? This is because those who suffer ADHD/ADD/Autistic Spectrum issues often need grounding first, by working on the sole chakras I can create the grounding they need, this will help to still their mind and body.

Past clients have reported a range of benefits from having Reiki; calmness, a quiet mind, a physical stillness if they are someone who is normally restless and twitchy, better sleep, better attention levels, on an emotional level they often feel less fearful, more open to physical contact if they were contact phobic, able to think more clearly and more. So it really is a fantastic modality and I would definitely recommend it.

Will It Cure Me?

It may have the ability to cure you but in a bid to manage expectations, it would be better to expect symptoms to be alleviated and for you to feel more balanced than usual. I would recommend regular session to everyone, one session just won’t be sufficient. Certainly the benefits will make it worthwhile and whilst everyone has a different experience, they all agree they felt better for it.

If you have a loved one or work in the environment where you think Reiki is needed, why not become a practitioner yourself? It will be cheaper in the long run than keep paying for sessions, plus as the healer you also get the benefit of the Reiki energy, how great is that?

So go try a session, let me know how you get on and if you decide you do want to train as a Reiki Practitioner, get in touch and I can let you know details of my next classes.
